Overpower - Windsurfing Club, …welcome on board !!!

As a result of a Windsurfing movement leader in the universe of national Windsurfing, Overpower Club was born 20 years ago, in Costa de Caparica, Portugal and developed simultaneously with Funboard in the World.

The non-existence of a sportive structure in the national Funboard made the Club call to itself the organization of the first regatta of this sport in Portugal, which would be the start of a news windsurfers association. The Club organized the 1st Overpower Regatta, in 1984, the long expected big national regatta, placing itself right away in the leadership of the organization of the most important events in this area.

In 1990 the Club launched the Tide Table 100%SURF, a publication that achieved an amazing success all over the country, due to a rigorous beach report kept from Galícia to Gibraltar, to a section with local guides more adequate to the surf and windsurf practise and to practical information concerning tide schedules all over the country.

It established and manages the first Portuguese Surf School, with a pedagogic programme recognised by ISA [International Surfing Association] and has received large complements from Mr Couto dos Santos, the Education Minister at that time.

And more recently [1994], the Overpower Club organised the 1st Portugal Cup of Course Racing, nowadays one of the most important events of the sportive national calendar.

The Club was involved in all the creative process of the Ibero Funboard Circuit. In 1995 the Club beginning a strong co-operation with PBA-Spain, towards the development of the Ibero Atlantic Windsurfing Circuit, making the Portuguese and Spanish spots known worldwide.

In 2000, organised the IFCA World Wave Championships, in Guincho, one of the most important world events in Funboard. For the first time, Portugal is called to organize such a prestigious event, and this candidature has as reference of the Overpower’s activities.

In the same year we organized an important national Regatta with the original format of Formula 42 and we introduced the Formula Windsurfing in Portugal, a modality that is a reference in the national schedule until today.

Internationally, in 2002, the Overpower Club organized the Formula Windsurfing European Championships, and some Euro Cup’s in Cascais and in Porto Santo Island.

Finally, in 2003, we were responsible for the organization of the Formula Experience European Championships, an event with the presence of the best Sailors of the Class, which give to our organization an increased responsibility in this realization.

We feel doubly proud with this Formula Experience Championship, for having been responsible in the past for the introduction of FW in Portugal and in present for organizing an Event that could be the first steps of the probably Winners of the 2008 Olympic Games in China.

In the search of a supported development of the worldwide Windsurfing, for the next years, the Overpower Club will organize, in Guincho, Portugal, with the supervision IFCA [ International Funboard Class Association ] and ISAF [International Sailing Federation] - the Windsurfing FreeWave World Championships 2004.

Already prepares with the PWA [ Professional Windsurfing Association ] the coming to Portugal of a Windsurfing World Cup - Grand Slam, in 2005.

Keep Surfing,

José Guimarães
[Overpower Club Chairman]

I think Guincho is a great place for competition.

I have been there for the last 3 weeks developing the new FW board for Fanatic and we had enough wind to sail every day with many good wave sailing days also.
