Press Release 6 - Portimão, 10.09.2008

Portimão is under good winds for the Formula Windsurfing World Championships!

The second day of race was full of strong emotions! The sea was slightly wavy and the wind was always present, what made the regattas of the day decisive to the sailors’ positions in the of the 2008 Portimão Formula Windsurfing World Championships classification.

The races started at 02:00 p.m., when the wind was around the 12 knots. These conditions kept on improving till the end of the afternoon, when an impressive 20 knots were registered, around 06:00 p.m., which made possible to achieve a total of 6 races, 2 for the Women division and 4 for the Men division.

As 2 races had already been done yesterday for the Women division, at present, this division has already a total of 4 races. For the Men division, 5 races had already been achieved, which allows the worst result to be put off. Should the wind fall and make it impossible to have more races in the following competition days, which is a very unlikely scenery for the moment, it would be already possible to appoint the Wold Champions in both divisions.

But let’s look at the results! In the Women division, the first place belongs to Marta Hlavaty [POL 1], the Poland racer that became a serious candidate to the World Champion title in the Women division of the Portimão Formula Windsurfing World Championships. The second place was conquered by Allison Shreeve [AUS 911], the current World Champion in Title and the third belongs to Olga Maslivets [UKR 9] from Ukraine.

7. Maarja Niinemets EST 84
8. Maria Anders Castro ESP 2
9. Morane Demont FRA 59

In the third place, comes the British Ross Williams [GBR 83], current Europe Champion. So, after 5 races and a put off, the results are as follows:

In addition to the excellent races provided by the World Championships, the IWA [International Windsurfing Association] took place here in Portimão as well, with the presence of the representatives of the Classes. The several interventions surrounded the subject of the Formula One Design project for the next Olympic Games in 2012, of which the advantages make it a promising alternative to the current Class RS:X.

For tomorrow, the wind forecasts are great, so we might have the best day in terms of weather conditions for the Championships. We can expect one more great day of races... The sands of the Alvor Beach, Portimão, will be the huge pit of this unique show… a sea coloured with sails, one of which will be the title winner!

Sponsoring the coming of this great event to Portugal, we count on the Town Hall of Portimão as main sponsor and ExpoArade, EM and the Grupo Pestana - Hotels Resorts as official sponsors.
