Press Release 7 - Portimão, 11.09.2008

A generous wind over a shining sea... on the most exciting day of the competition, so far!

On the third day of competition of the 2008 Portimão Formula Windsurfing World Championships, the weather conditions managed to overcome all the expectations! The wind blowed constantly and generously and the shining sea showed itself very weak in waves... providing for the setting of the ideal scenery for a fierce competition of the Formula Windsurfing.

And of course the Organization couldn’t help to take advantage of these conditions in order to run the biggest possible number of races. For the Women division, 4 races were done, completing a total of 8. As far as the Men are concerned, a total of 9 races were accomplished during the three days of competition, having 5 of them taken place today. So, each competitor of both divisions can now put off his or her worst result, once that is allowed for the second time after the 7th [being for the first time after the 4th].

As to the results, in what concerns the Women division, the Poland Marta Hlavaty defended her position in the first place, whereas the Australian Allison Shreeve kept her second place, but very close to Marta, so we look forward to see if this positions will be the same tomorrow! As for the third place, it also stays the same, occupied by Olga Maslivets, from Ukraine. So, the Classification Top 10 in the Women division is the following:

However, in the Men division, a new leading figure appears, the Poland Wojtek Brzozowski, who surpassed Gonzalo Costa Hoevel in the dispute of the title. In third, Ross Williams from Britain, kept his position. So, the top ten places are as follows:

For tomorrow, the weather forecast foresees another good day of races and hot competition, with winds around the 16 to 20 knots.

The expectation towards the next races is getting stronger and stronger, not only for the competitors but also for the audience. Everyday the sands welcome more and more people that begin to feel the strong emotions of this thrilling sport... which show isn’t limited to this beach, but to all the planet! In fact, the event images are circulating around the most opposite spots of the world, gathering and consecrating all the community of the international windsurfing!

Sponsoring the coming of this great event to Portugal, we count on the Town Hall of Portimão as main sponsor and ExpoArade, EM and the Grupo Pestana - Hotels Resorts as official sponsors. NISSAN has also joined this initiative, having acquired the title of “Official Vehicle of the Event” and participating, at the same time, in an active way with the Navaras - a 4X4 sportive utilitarian with all the power required by the demanding moves made by the Organization’s staff. This official sponsor will also provide two powerful boats, which will carry the guests to the Regatta Fields, in order to allow them to follow closely every strategy made by the competitors.

The TV coverage, production and distribution of the event is the responsibility of Sail TV which will provide images to the main world broadcasters and also to the Red Handed - Television and SIC Radical - Curto Circuito, the official stations. The national and international media prints associated with the event are Maxmen, Focus, Boa Forma and the official radio broadcaster is Best Rock FM. The sport portal website www.conquilha.com will have all the updated information related to the event available to the Portuguese-speaking community, estimated in 230 million people.
