Press Release 9 - Portimão, 13.09.2008
Polish competitors in the front line of both divisions, after another day of competition!
Polish competitors in the front line of both divisions, after another day of competition! We’ve come to the fifth day of races in these 2080 Portimão Formula Windsurfing World Championships. The wind made a late entrance and only around 06:00 p. m. we had the minimum conditions gathered to accomplish the races. In the meantime, the athletes and the crew took the down time to relax, either trying out other less demanding sports in terms of weather conditions – as the wakeboard, for instance – or travelling by boat or just enjoying the wonderful day at the beach, always keeping their senses in alert to the minimum sign of wind! With no doubt, the fact that windsurfing must stick to the force of the elements is one of the most interesting characteristics of this great sport...! So, it was with a moderate wind of 10-11 knots that the first and only race of the day was stated at 06:30 p. m. in the Women division. As for the results, Marta Hlavaty managed to recover the first place, with just one point ahead the second racer, Allison Shreeve. The third place is still occupied by Olga Maslivets from Ukraine. Therefore, after a total of 11 races for this division, the top ten was the following: 1. Marta Hlavaty POL 111 2. Allison Shreeve AUS 911 3. Olga Maslivets URK 9 4. Agnieszka Pietrasik POL 19 5. Sarah Hebert ARM 1 6. Verena Fauster ITA 31 7. Maarja Niinemets EST 84 8. Jozefina Rudzinska POL 1381 9. Morane Demont (FOD) FRA 59 10. Maria Anders Castro ESP 2
The Men’s race started soon after, but the wind suddenly decreased, which rendered the race impossible. So, the top 10 remains unchanged, with Wojtek Brzozowski in the first position, followed by Gonzalo Costa Hoevel from Argentina, the third place belonging to Michal Polanowski:
1.Wojtek Brzozowski POL 10 2.Gonzalo Costa Hoevel ARG 3 3. Michal Polanowski POL 16 4. Ross Williams GBR 83 5. Jesper Vesterstrom DEN 111 6. Pawel Hlavaty POL 11 7. Julien Quentel FRA 421 8. Dennis Littel FRA 421 9. Fabio Melo BRA 74 10. Arnon Dagan ISR 1
All attentions are now focused on tomorrow, when the Finishing Regatta will take place, which will definitely appoint the Formula Windsurfing World Champions. We hope the wind will show up... and that it can be more generous! Afterwards, we will have the most exciting moment of the Championship, the Prize Award Ceremony, in which the best of the best will climb to the podium in order to receive the so desired trophy! After that, we will assist to the Finishing Ceremony, in which all the competitors and people involved in the event will gather in a scrumptious dinner to celebrate this sublime sport! Sponsoring the coming of this great event to Portugal, we count on the Town Hall of Portimão as main sponsor and ExpoArade, EM and the Grupo Pestana - Hotels Resorts as official sponsors. NISSAN has also joined this initiative, having acquired the title of “Official Vehicle of the Event” and participating, at the same time, in an active way with the Navaras - a 4X4 sportive utilitarian with all the power required by the demanding moves made by the Organization’s staff.
